POTTSTOWN >> On a day when children all over the country will trick-or-treat in the dark, a local community wellness initiative will light up the night on Halloween with a safe zone event.
“Light in the Night Safe Zones are local community, high energy and visibly lit-up block parties hosted by local churches, charities or families,” said Mark Malizzi, chaplain of Thunder Outreach.
Malizzi said two Pottstown Fire Department trucks will be at the event to provide lighting and a safe environment. Children that come out will be able to climb inside the truck and even sit behind the driver’s seat.
“The goal is to provide safe areas for children to get safe candy,” Malizzi said.
Heart of God Family Worship Center is hosting the free safe zone activity at a parking lot they own located at the intersection of Beech and York Streets in Pottstown. The address 170 N. York St. can be used to find the lot. The Light in the Night block party will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31.
The event will have games for children as well as food such as hot dogs and hot cider. Then instead of trick-or-treating, kids will enjoy trunk-or-treating. Children will still have an opportunity to fill their bags with goodies by going from car trunk to car trunk to get candy.
A glow-light kids Zumba class is another way the safe zone event will light up the night. Families are invited to dance for some fun fitness. Glow bracelets will be handed out to participants. Desiree Heath, owner of Beyond Fun Fitness studio, will lead the 30-minute Zumba class beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Beyond Fun Fitness is located inside the Coventry Mall in the Boscov’s wing. The studio offers several types of Zumba classes including ones for children and seniors. For more information about the studio and upcoming classes, visit the website www.beyondfunfitness.com.
Malizzi and Heart of God Family Worship Center are part of an initiative called Strong at Heart. As part of the initiative; area organizations, ministries and schools come together to provide the Pottstown area with wellness community outreach events.
