POTTSTOWN >> Take a community walk by the riverside for the next Mercury Mile on Wednesday.
This week is the second event in the “Down by the River” series in partnership with the Schuylkill River Heritage Area. The series started last month and includes monthly walk and talks along the Schuylkill River Trail until October. This week’s afternoon stroll will include a short 5-minute presentation about a nutrition topic from dietitian Jessica Garnett. After the short talk, the group will take a mile-long walk on the trail. The walk and talk will begin from Pottstown Riverfront Park promptly at noon Wednesday. The park is located near the Schuylkill River Heritage Area building and the address is 140 College Drive. Participants are to meet near the park’s pavilion area.
Walking is not only great for physical health but also for mental health. Take a break from work, chores, tasks and other responsibilities to enjoy a nice stroll along the beautiful Schuylkill River. Everyone’s invited including pets.
The next and final walk in the “Down by the River” series will be on Oct. 26 when Laura Washington, Mosaic Pottstown community garden manager, will discuss how herbs can be grown indoors.
The social walk is meant to allow area residents to come together and learn about local events and opportunities. The Schuylkill River Heritage Area is a national and state heritage area in southeastern Pennsylvania. The heritage area’s boundaries cover the Schuylkill watershed in the counties of Schuylkill, Berks, Chester, Montgomery and Philadelphia. For more information, visit the website at www.schuylkillriver.org or the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/SchuylkillRiverHeritageArea.
The Mercury Mile is weekly and promotes walking and other fitness activities as a free exercise. Sometimes, different businesses or organizations host the weekly activity. The walk has travelled from one organization to the next encouraging people to walk at lunch and come together as a community. Walkers are asked to bring business cards or contact information to exchange with one another.
Organizations interested in hosting the walk should email Michilea Patterson at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 610-850-0282 to schedule a time.
To find each week’s location, visit the Fit for Life website pottsmercfit4life.com and like the Facebook page www.facebook.com/Mercfit4life. Walkers can also be added to The Mercury Mile email list by contacting Patterson. If there is inclement weather Wednesday afternoon then the walk will be cancelled.
