Row, row, row your boat will be the theme of the night for a fundraising event at CrossFit Pottstown.

The fitness organization is hosting a row-a-thon from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at 21 N. Hanover St. Registered participants will row for a set time on indoor machines to raise at least $50 each. Rowers either pay the money themselves or get sponsors. Each participant will receive a free T-shirt.

Proceeds from the night will go toward the Schuylkill River Athletic Club which is organizing a summer youth program called Row Up. The program is designed to allow middle and high school students the opportunity to learn rowing practices. Row Up will benefit youth by increasing physical strength, endurance and overall fitness, according to the row-a-thon registration form. The form also stated that students will learn discipline, teamwork and dedication.

“There’s a mentoring component to it,” said John Breen, rowing coach.

He said Row Up principles were adopted from similar programs in New York and Pennsylvania. The youth programs aim to empower students physically and mentally through the sport of rowing. Breen said these programs have been great for youth but usually aren’t available to everyone. He said Row Up will give area youth the opportunity to try something new that might not have been possible otherwise.

“We want children who have never rowed before to get in a boat, train, compete and win,” stated the row-a-thon registration form.

Row Up is a six-week program that will include CrossFit training, dragon boat training, a nutrition clinic and more. All participants will have the opportunity to actually row on the water.

The Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation is sponsoring the program but more money is still needed to allow as many as youth as possible to benefit from the experience. The Schuylkill River Athletic Club has a goal to raise $6,000 through the row-a-thon on Friday. Donations are also welcomed.
